Travelers who live anywhere other than another Caribbean island will arrive by air to Princess Juliana (PJIA) airport in Dutch St. Maarten. French St. Martin has L’Esperance Airport in Grand Case, but it is mainly used for commutes between islands.
St. Maarten/St. Martin Has Second Busiest Airport in East Caribbean
Princess Juliana airport can accommodate sizable aircraft since it was originally a WWII military base. In 1943, the site became civilian in nature and was named for Juliana of the Netherlands. Juliana was crown princess of the Netherlands at the time and had visited the island in 1944. Juliana later became queen and abdicated in 1980.
Today, PJIA is the second busiest airport in the east Caribbean, second only to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The airport has undergone several phases of renovations and today offers restaurants, ATMs, and car-rental kiosks.
